After World War I US Colonel John T. Thompson saw the need for a light-weight, portable machine gun. What he cam up with would become the iconic Tommy Gun.

The early Tommy Guns were not very accurate as the barrel had a tendency to rise with the force of the muzzle blast. Later models were fitted with a, so-called, Cutts compensator which appeared in 1926.

Dr Richard Jordan Gatling devised the remarkable Gatling Gun during The American Civil War with the intention of saving lives.

The Gatling Gun went into service and was used with some success in the Spanish – American war of 1898. In the heat of battle the human operator turned out to be the gun’s weakest link. The Gatling Gun was retired after it had proven too unreliable for battlefield use.
