Amantadine Hydrochloride is an antiviral medication intended, primarily, for the treatment of influenza. However, it can also ease muscle stiffness and improve muscle control and, for these reasons, can be used by patients with Parkinson’s Disease.
It’s benefits in alleviating fatigue in MS were discovered by chance when people with MS were being treated for ‘flu. MS can have symptoms affecting muscle control, so Amantadine may bring benefits greater than easing the fatigue.
It is thought that Amantadine causes the release of increased levels of dopamine in the brain and it may lower the level of acetylcholine, a brain chemical that contributes to movement. The increased dopamine levels produces an enhanced state of wakefulness.
Amantadine Hydrochloride may go under the brand name Symmetrel.
Side-effects may include:
- nausea
- dizziness
- headaches.
I do not have any first-hand experience with his treatment or any of the other fatigue fighting drugs.
