Hyson Green was, in the 1970s, a striking example of how badly wrong the city planners got it. Alcatraz, the jungle failed and is now a supermarket.

But the failure of the high-rise housing experiment was hugely damaging in a deeper sense too. It helped to fuel a growing mistrust of Government planning and a loss of faith in their supposedly benign bureaucrats.
