The Rangers’ Rogues Gallery

The time preceding the Rangers financial collapse was peppered with shady characters. All supposedly good, upright businessmen with flawless reputations. But as the dust settled on the scandal, the true colours of the rogues running Rangers Football Club became all too apparent.

In a compelling and intricate drama

Who Sold the Jersey?

  • Sir David Murray, the man who enabled the famous nine-in-a-row but, whose reputation is now under serious question.

  • Craig Whyte, Sir David’s successor and now the pantomime villain of the piece.
  • Andrew Ellis, the man who brought Whyte to the table.
  • Gary Withey, a former lawyer who helped him buy Rangers.
  • Alistair Johnston, the chairman of the Rangers board which opposed the Craig Whyte deal.

  • Paul Baxendale-Walker, the billionaire, playboy, pornographer who brought the infamous tax scheme to Ibrox.
  • Duff and Phelps, appointed by Craig Whyte as administrators.
  • David Grier, also of Duff and Phelps adviser to Craig Whyte during the negotiations to buy the club.
  • Ticketus, the London finance firm who put up the cash for Whyte.
  • Lloyds Bank of Scotland, they were calling the shots.
  • The Taxman, claims he is owed a fortune for the tax wheeze operated by the Murray group.

Most claim to have had the best interest of the club at heart. An unusually large subs bench includes the Rangers players and staff who benefited from the tax scheme and to make sure the game is played by the rules, the referee will come from the SPL and the SFA.

The sceptical observer would say that too much money was involved and too many self-interests were allowed to dictate the passage of play, leading to the inevitable downfall of a great football club.
