I have used Sildenafil citrate for its intended purpose in the past, and while it does as claimed, it also gave me a nasty headache.
I was, nevertheless, intrigued when I happened across an article that claimed Viagra could allow a, practically complete, recovery from MS. The stuff of fiction! That was my first thought, but I read it anyway.
A research team from the UAB Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine directed by Dr Agustina Garcia, in collaboration with the research team directed by Dr Juan Hidalgo from the UAB Institute of Neurosciences have been conducting an animal experiment in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis or EAE. This is an animal model of multiple sclerosis and the tests have shown that animals given a daily dose of Sildenafil citrate showed a marked improvement within 8 days.”
Researchers demonstrated that a daily treatment with sildenafil after disease onset, quickly reduced clinical signs, with a practically complete recovery in 50% of the cases after eight days of treatment.
Scientists observed how the drug reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the white matter of the spinal cord, thus reducing damage to the nerve cell's axion and facilitating myelin repair.
Yes I was intrigued, especially with the suggestion of myelin repair. The fact that Viagra and sister products Cialis and Levitra are vasodilator drugs does, in my mind, explain the headaches I get.
I am, obviously, disappointed that no human trials have been carried, perhaps I should be the guinea pig!
